Yellow: A Story of Belief

The upcoming Marathi film handles the sensitive subject of a child with Down’s syndrome

Yellow is not only a true story but also an attempt to initiate a societal change, expressed debutant director, Mahesh Limaye. His first film Yellow tells the story of young girl with Down ’s syndrome and her journey of becoming a swimming champion. The film will release on April 4 as announced by its team in a press conference on March 18 in Pune.

Limaye’s first directorial venture is written by Balak Palak fame Amber Hadap and Ganesh Pandit. The cast consists of Mrinal Kulkarni as the protagonist’s mother, Mohan Joshi as father, Hrushikesh Joshi as uncle, Upendra Limaye as coach and Usha Nadkarni.

Known for his camera work in Dabangg, Fashion, Balak  Palak, Limaye said that he always wanted to direct a Marathi film. “I had decided early on that my first directorial project would be in Marathi cinema because its beauty is great content. Yellow has been made with extensive research and study. Its underlying spirit is ‘if you can dream it, you can do it,’” said Limaye.

The lead actor Gauri Gadgil was discovered during the research for Yellow. She is a champion swimmer and has won two silver medals at the Special Olympics. “You can do it!” exclaimed Gadgil with excitement waving out to her family and coach who were also present at the press conference.

Kulkarni, while narrating her experience of working with special children said, “Working with these children was such a joy. I have changed as a person post this film; it made me realise that you must count your blessings and live in the moment.”

Also present were music director Kaushal Inamdar and Apeksha Dandekar who has sung a ‘special song’ in the film. Inamder said, “Instead of courting tragedy like most artists tend to do, this film is about taking up a challenge positively and winning. This is a story where pain meets positivity and ultimately a winner emerges. The music blends in subtly with the story.” Lyrics have been penned by Guru Thakur.

The film has been produced by Riteish Deshmukh and Uttung Hitendra Thakur under the banner of Viva In-En and Mumbai Film Company. The film releases on April 4 and will be screened with subtitles.
